San Francisco Mayoral Proclamation for Global Peace Walk 2000

Following is the text of the San Francisco Mayoral Proclamation from Willie Brown received January 13, 2000, for the occasion of the departure of Global Peace Walk 2000 from San Francisco on January 15, 2000, after 9AM opening ceremony. This will be carried with the other messages we are gathering for delivery to the public and the governments in Washington DC and the United Nations as the walk proceeds through San Jose, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Big Sur, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Hollywood, Bakersfield, Tehachapi, and eastward.

Proclamation


City and County of San Francisco


WHEREAS, peace is of the utmost importance to everyone and begins when we respect each other, mother earth and ourselves; and

WHEREAS, senseless loss of life, liberty and property can be eliminated once we establish a vision of world peace in concurrence with nonviolent solutions to world differences; and

WHEREAS, we, the people of the world, can lessen the incidence of violence and separation by pulling together and working for a common goal, global peace; and

WHEREAS, Global Peace Walk 2000 will start from San Francisco Veterans War Memorial Building, the birthplace of the United Nations, on January 15th 2000; and

WHEREAS, Global Peace Walk will commemorate the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and spread his message of non-violence across America to Washington D.C., and to the UN for its 55th anniversary to inaugurate the UN Year and Decade of Creating a Culture of Peace for the 21st Century; now

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Willie L. Brown, Jr., Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, recognize the importance of promoting peace and harmony in our community, and do hereby proclaim January 15, 2000 as ...
