City of Berkeley Proclamation
GLOBAL PEACE WALK
GLOBAL PEACE NOW!
Whereas, Reverend Yusen Yamato initiated the Global Peace Walk on January
15, 1995, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., walking from the
United Nations Building in New York City to the War Memorial Building in San
Francisco, arriving on June 20, 1995; and
Whereas, the prayer for global peace is recognized as a universal human
resolve and the message of the United Nations, "to save succeeding
generations from the scourge of war...to reaffirm faith in the dignity of
human rights...and to live together in peace", is still as relevant and
vital today as it was 55 years ago; and
Whereas, each year, Global Peace Walk has symbolically reaffirmed this
message with a walk across a portion of the continent; and
Whereas, in the millennium year 2000, on January 15, the birthday of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Global Peace Walk will again traverse the country
from San Francisco to New York City, stopping in Washington D.C. for
Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day activities and the rededication of the
Washington Monument, and will arrive in New York City for the United Nations
55th Anniversary celebration on October 24th, 2000; and
Whereas, the City of Berkeley was proclaimed a Global Peace Zone in March
of 1999; and
Whereas, on Saturday, December 4th, 1999, Global Peace Walk is holding a
celebratory event at the Berkeley Community Theater,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Shirley Dean, Mayor of the City of
Berkeley, do hereby proclaim December 4, 1999 as
GLOBAL PEACE WALK DAY -- 1999
in the City of Berkeley and urge our residents and visitors to continue
their many activities devoted to peace and social justice.
[signed]
Shirley Dean, Mayor December 4, 1999
